How Madeleine Jomolca Went From Athlete to Diversion Junkie, to a Health & Wellness Professional
With over ten years of experience in the health, wellness, and fitness industries, Madeleine Jomolca, known as Maddie, understands the necessity of overall wellbeing. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, is a certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, an International Sports Science Association (ISSA) group fitness instructor, and an active member of the International Association of Health Coaches (IAHC).
As part of her commitment to ongoing growth, she’ll soon be board-certified by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). Madeleine puts her knowledge to good use as the founder and director of The Health Coach Network: The You Project. Plus, she’s an active blogger, webinar creator, and health coach for Fitbit Health Solutions.
However, her path to wellness wasn’t easy or clear cut. Madeleine grew to identify health and wellness from an external perspective as a former all-around athlete, swimsuit model, and sexual abuse victim. A view that discounted the trauma living within her. This embedded distress led her down a trail of self-destructive behaviors. In fact, it wasn’t until later in life, through the help of third-party support, that she realized the marked and ultimately damaging discrepancies that dwell within a flawed healthcare system.
In 2015, after experiencing what felt like a lifetime of hurdles within her own wellness, Madeleine embarked on a self-discovery journey. According to Madeleine, her discovery helped her understand “that wellness, a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, is an inside job.” This realization prompted her to explore a more holistic alternative to wellness by focusing on the mind, body, and soul.
She aimed to combine her personal experience and self-efficacy with formal education, including certification, in the relatively new field of health coaching. Not wanting to waste any time, Madeleine immediately volunteered. She began assisting women’s rehab centers and homeless centers as a wellness director. There, she was able to help many people survive, and flourish using holistic methods of self-care and wellness.
Yet, Madeleine knew, all too well, that her vision and mission stretched far beyond the one-on-one meetings. So she began contacting her local health community centers. Madeleine presented several centers with the possibility of implementing a program that would introduce a holistic approach to wellness while giving their patients another wellness option.
The challenge: Opening minds to holistic options
When Madeleine began her journey, health coaching was a relatively new field. It was unknown to many or most practitioners, and others in the healthcare industry. Madeleine asked, “How would I convince them to become open to combining the clinical aspects with a holistic alternative when treating patients/clients?”
The solution: A strategic approach to storytelling
To overcome this obstacle, Madeleine knew she had to build a convincing and compelling story. This required designing a strong network, a team of like-minded individuals, whose voices encourage and evoke “change.” A reform needed within the system and in the behaviors of others.
Madeleine turned to her experience developing, managing, and assisting several startups, including two non-profits. She immediately began to strategize and build her team of specialists and board members, including numerous other health coaches, mental therapists, personal trainers, nutritionists, and dieticians.
Realizing that the best way to live the vision and mission was by speaking to the masses, even lobbying, if necessary, Madeleine concluded that the best platform for their voice to be heard was by way of a non-profit. At that point, “The Health Coach Network,” was born.
The results: Eliminating the barriers
There is still much work to do, such as presentations, webinars, and platforms to tap into. However, Madeleine says, “We have been able to penetrate through the initial “red tape.” We now offer coaching in several centers throughout South Florida. Our work with healthcare specialists and extended holistic programs delivers individualized lifestyle changes that meet unique needs and health goals.”
