Regardless of what’s going on in the world, opening a private practice can be one of your greatest adventures, but it’s not without struggles. Dr. Lonna Denny, a licensed chiropractor, realized her dream by taking a leap and pursuing her vision. Although it wasn’t always easy, she persevered.

After graduating from her doctoral program, she had a big dream and only $7,000 in total assets. Dr. Denny says, “That was all the money I had to my name, but I had the vision of opening a healthcare center in one of San Francisco’s most challenging neighborhoods, The Tenderloin.”

However, it was 2002, and San Francisco had just suffered the dot com meltdown’s economic impact. Although the economic outlook wasn’t shiny, the downturn enabled Dr. Denny to lease office space at below-market rent. She admits, “At night, we cruised the streets looking for discarded furniture that we could repurpose to furnish our office.” Dr. Denny knew it’d be tough to start a private practice, but they had a vision and decided to follow through with it.

Dr. Denny says, “Our vision was to provide superior quality chiropractic care, excellent customer service, and provide an oasis of healing in a neighborhood that badly needed it. The first year was a struggle and a crazy adventure. Actually, all 18+ years that we’ve owned this company has been a grand adventure and one that has made us successful beyond what we thought possible.”

To reach their goals, Dr. Denny refers to a three-part strategy driven by the pillars of perseverance, hard work, and seizing opportunities. According to her, “This strategy not only brought in a lot of business, but it also enabled me to become a wellness expert for the City of San Francisco. It allowed me to lecture for several federal agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, and Homeland Security. Also, our success enabled us to sponsor yearly charity events benefiting homeless services in the Tenderloin.”

Even though it took a leap of faith, Dr. Denny lives by their vision: “To help as many people as we can, have as much fun as possible, and be wildly successful.”

On Yelp: “Dr. Denny rocks.  I have gone to her for my shoulder, which my shoulder specialist doctor could not fix, even with cortisone shots.  She used a cold laser, infrared, and another technique to break up scar tissue in addition to adjusting it.  I got back 90% of my range of motion within 3 or 4 treatments.  She did the same for a wrist that was hurting like crazy.  I have recommended a number of friends to her.  She is terrific.” Nancy L.
